Hello friends, I decided to talk about two things that don’t seem to have much in common at first glance: Bingo and addiction recovery. I promise, there's a connection, and it’s more than just a random draw of the balls. Get ready, because we’re going to see why recovery is a lot like playing Bingo. The anticipation as the numbers are called, the hope that this time, you’ll get that perfect row, and the frustration when you’re one number away and someone else wins. Does this sound familiar? <blockquote>Recovery is a lot like that. It’s full of moments where you think you’ve got it all lined up, and then life throws you a curveball.</blockquote> Remember those times in Bingo when you’re so close to winning, but someone else shouts “Bingo!” just before you? Recovery often feels &nbsp;like that too. You might have days, weeks, or even months where you’re on track and life seems it has turned the corner, but then something happens, and you slip up. It's like missing out on that Bingo win by one number. But here’s the thing: just like in Bingo, you get another chance. <blockquote>You don’t walk away from the table. In 2022 alone, fentanyl was involved in 67% of opioid-related deaths . The relentless promotion of alcohol and the glamorization of drug use in media are powerful influences on young minds. Know what drugs your child is prescribed. Educate yourself! With little to no income, no stable housing, and limited access to resources, they must figure out how to reestablish their lives. <blockquote>The housing market, with skyrocketing prices and exorbitant rental rates, presents an insurmountable challenge for many. </blockquote>Even middle-income families struggle to afford homes, let alone those starting from scratch. This could be a Sober Living home or a Homeless Shelter. <blockquote>This requires more often than not that you share a bedroom with a stranger who is also homeless and likely in recovery. </blockquote>I have frequently wondered how often we consider the living situation of people in recovery. How comfortable would WE be living closely with a stranger and having no options? Why do we think it is acceptable for others? Community Resource Centers: We need to establish locations where individuals in recovery can more easily access new, or like new condition basic needs such as clothing, furnishings, and groceries. <blockquote>Why do we assume anyone appreciates or truly wants our broken, worn, torn, out of date, or just ugly throw aways? Advocacy at the local, state, and national levels can bring about changes that benefit everyone, especially those who are low-income and may also be in recovery. Should income truly decide who has a home to go to and who doesn't have that opportunity? Take recovery out of it and really think about this. <blockquote>Do "poor" people not deserve housing that is safe and nice like others would expect to have in our community?&nbsp;</blockquote> Volunteer and Donate: Get involved with local organizations and non-profits that support recovery efforts.
